The name of Carl Peter Faberge is written into the history of world's jewellery art with golden letters. This man made Russian jewellery to jump into new unprecedented level. Of course, the most jewellery wares that are being bought are being bought for making present to someone. And it is a significant present, so we also can say that Carl Faberge made the art of giving presents to jump at the same level as jewellery. And that is why we think so. At Easter eve 1886 Russian Tzar Alexander III was preparing to make exquisite gift for his Tzarina Maria Fedorovna. The Easter holidays are very significant for all Christians as they believe that that day many years ago young Jesus Christ was born. From that time the holiday of Easter is considered as a day of resurrection of Christ. And on that day there is a tradition to give eggs as presents – the symbol of new life and happiness connected with it. Firstly, simple chicken eggs were used – they were painted into different colours and people were giving them one to each other. But that Easter, at 1886, everything changed, as Alexander III ordered Carl Faberge to create gift for his wife. Faberge that time was just a young and talented goldsmith and jeweller, he was learning this craft from his father, but his works have already captured Maria Fedorovna's heart. And so Faberge came to work upon his refined gift. The team of the best goldsmiths, stone-cutters, miniaturists and designers was helping him to do that and on the Great Day of Easter he presented his work to Alexander and then to Maria. There was no limit for their delight – the first Faberge Easter egg captured the imagination of everyone who have seen it that day. The egg was made of precious materials, decorated with expensive stones and metals, inside of the egg there was a golden yolk with tiny hen and a miniature diamond crown – the copy of Russian Royal one. Since that time Carl Faberge became world-famous, Tzar made him an official goldsmith of Russian Imperial Royal Court – among his duties there was one special – his had to create one new egg with surprise for every Easter. And for many years of such work the great collection of Faberge eggs emerged. Today this collection can only be seen in museums and private collections.
